Dr Jun Kwon
Facial feminisation surgery is a combination of surgical procedures which alter male presenting facial features to create more traditionally female presenting facial features, as part of gender affirmation treatment.
If the goal is to create more male presenting features, this is called facial masculisation surgery.
Facial feminisation surgery can include a wide range of procedures, and each are tailored and personalised to each individual patient. During your consultation, Dr Kwon will listen to and prioritise your wishes and concerns, assess and make recommendations and work with you to provide a customised plan to support your journey.
Examples of surgical procedures which Dr Kwon may recommend as part of FFS or FMS include:
Surgery is performed under general anaethesia, usually you will be able to go home the same day. As you can imagine, facial feminisation may mean a range of different interventions so each individual patient's procedure is likely to be different.
The recovery will depend on the procedures you receive, we will counsel you on your anticipated recovery at your consultation and prior to your surgery. Usually the surgery is not very painful, but this varies from person to person. Simple pain relief such as Paracetamol should help with the discomfort. You can expect there may be some brusing and swelling around the areas that have been operated on, this tends to be most severe at 3-4 days after surgery, before starting to settle.
You may have splints on your nose or packing inside your nose. The splint, packing and sutures (if any require removal) are removed around 1 week after surgery.
If you do under go fat transfer, compressive garments such as bike shorts may help reduce the swelling and discomfort.
We advise 7-10 days off work, longer if you do physical work. You may return to the gym at 4 weeks after surgery. The swelling will take 6-12 months to fully settle.
You may notice some numbness around the skin where you have had surgery, usually this is temporary, but in some instances, such as the area behind your scalp incision, will be long term.
Minor irregularities may be felt, but usually these are not visible and should not raise concern. Rarely, further surgery may be recommended to improve the contour.
As facial feminisation surgery or facial masculinisation surgery usually involves a combination of a range of procedures, it is difficult to give price estimates without having had a consultation with Dr Kwon.
That being said, here are some price estimates of common individual procedures.
Forehead and orbital contouring, hairline advancement and browlift altogether is approximately $25,000 to $35,000.
Rhinoplasty is approximately $15,000 to $22,000 depending on what exactly is required.
