PLASTIC SURGEON

Rhinoplasty

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty or Septorhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose to improve the appearance of the nose or remove obstructions in your airway, or both.

What does surgery involve?

Surgery is performed under general anaethesia, usually you will be able to go home the same day. Surgery may take from 90 minutes to 4 hours depending on complexity of surgery.

What is the recovery period?

Usually the surgery is not very painful, but this varies from person to person. Simple pain relief such as Paracetamol should help with the discomfort. You can expect there may be some brusing and swelling around the nose and eyelids, this tends to be most severe at 3-4 days after surgery, before starting to settle.

You may have splints on your nose or packing inside your nose. The splint, packing and sutures (if any require removal) are removed around 1 week after surgery.

We advise 7-10 days off work, longer if you do physical work. You may return to the gym at 4 weeks after surgery. The swelling will take 6-12 months to fully settle.

What are the risks?

You may notice some numbness around the skin of your nose, the upper lip or even the upper teeth, particularly at the tip, usually this is temporary.

Minor irregularities along the nose may be felt, but usually these are not visible and should not raise concern. Rarely, further surgery may be recommended to improve the contour of the nose.

What are the costs?

The surgery is approximately $15,000 to $25,000 depending on what exactly is required. This includes the surgeon's fee, hospital fees and anaesthetic fees. If it is covered, ACC may cover the cost of the entire surgery.
